To answer it, she needs a ritual in Penobscot that Ed wrote down from memory, a linguist to check every syllable, and Ed's daughter Elaine, who has been waiting four years for someone to ask. She has Dr. Rowan Ashby, whose sabbatical paperwork can wait, and Moss, the silver-muzzled Border Collie who has already made up his mind about the shape on the rocks.
