About this book

A quarry town on the New Hampshire border. A chamber of nine granite pillars. Two sets of footprints going in, and only one coming out.

November comes early to Stoneharbor, New Hampshire, a granite town a hundred and twenty miles inland from Moonhaven. Retired homicide detective Sam Blackwood goes there on a letter from the last man she ever expected to trust: Sterling Vane, out on bail and offering a name. Stoneharbor is next, he writes. And its Guardian went silent three years ago.

Beneath the old Hale quarry, nine pillars stand in a circle twenty-three meters down. Three years ago, someone cut into the seventh in the night. Nell Cray, the retired geologist who had kept the chamber alone for twenty-five years, walked out without finishing the work and never went back. Now a front company with a Delaware agent wants access to the quarry land, a sedan keeps changing its plates, and someone has found a second way into the stone.

Far from the lighthouse, Ezra Moonhaven, the ghost captain at her window, is only a faint voice in Sam’s ring. She still has Moss, the silver-muzzled Border Collie who finds what others miss, and Dr. Rowan Ashby, whose sabbatical is running out. She has a coffee-shop owner who watches every car on Main Street, a council vote that buys thirty days for a device that needs only twenty-five, and a historical society guest book with one name signed in it twice, three years apart.

Then a court order closes the quarry road, and one night is all that’s left. At two in the morning, Sam must finish what Nell couldn’t, while someone else is coming in through the second passage and the ring on her hand goes cold. And the stone has been keeping a secret of its own.

Murder at Stoneharbor is Book 4 of The Moonhaven Mysteries. Each book is a complete, satisfying mystery, and the series is best enjoyed in order.

Follow Sam into granite country before the stone gives up its secret.
